Retail value of the pet market in Japan FY 2014-2024
A peek into the pet market
The pet market in Japan is dominated by goods and services directed at dogs and cats, as the two species are the most owned pets in Japan. Despite the fast-growing online market, store-based retailing remained the preferred point of sales. However, a slight downward trend implies a growing trust among consumers in online retailers.Cats or dogs? Where does the favorite companion lie?
Despite a broad spectrum of legally permissible pets, living with one is not a common sight in Japan. Similar to how dogs were the most owned pet, the most desired species were dogs, relegating cats to the second place by a large margin. While the majority of Japanese people do not own an animal companion, those that do, predominantly remain with only one pet per household, limited by the small living spaces in the cities.
