By April 2020, deli-prepared foods in grocery stores in the United States had seen a massive decrease in sales due to the developing coronavirus pandemic. Soups were hit particularly hard, with sales declining 85 percent compared to the previous year. By the third week of May, soups were still 79 percent below the previous year's sales.
