The European Union Emissions Trading System (EU ETS) sets a cap on the amount of greenhouse gas emissions that can be emitted each year by entities covered by the scheme. The cap decreases gradually each year in order to achieve emissions reductions. The Union-wide cap in 2022 for stationary installations was estimated at roughly 1.5 billion metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalent (GtCO₂e).
