In 2019, the highest-congested national expressway section in Japan was on the Tomei Expressway from Ebina Junction to Yokohama-Machida Interchange, where the loss of time was estimated at approximately 1.72 million person-hours throughout the year. Tomei is the Japanese reading of the acronym built with the initial characters for the two highly-populated urban areas Tokyo and Nagoya, which the roughly 350km long expressway connects along the east coast.
