Leading causes of pregnancy-related deaths in the U.S. 2017-2019
From 2017 to 2019, the leading causes of pregnancy-related deaths were mental health conditions, hemorrhage, and cardiovascular and coronary conditions. These three leading underlying causes were responsible for about half of all pregnancy-related deaths. Mental health conditions alone accounted for one in five of all maternal mortality in the U.S. showing how important it is to screen for postpartum depression. This statistic shows the percentage of pregnancy-related deaths in 36 U.S. states from 2017 to 2019, by underlying cause.
