Oil refinery capacity in Italy 2007-2018
total volume of crude oil refined into products decreased over time.
Refineries in Italy
Between 2010 and 2017, the number of refineries situated in Italy decreased from 16 to 11 facilities. In 2018, Sicily – with 46.1 million tons – recorded the greatest refinery capacity nationwide. Regarding the output, the main petroleum products produced in Italy were gasoil and gasoline. In 2018, the volume of gasoil produced amounted to 31,226 thousand tons.
Energy from oil
Currently, oil is still one of the main energy sources deployed in Italy. However, its relevance in the Italian energy strategy gradually declined, leaving space for cleaner and more sustainable sources. As a matter of fact, between 2010 and 2018, the volume of crude oil deployed to cover primary energy consumption decreased from 73.1 to 60.8 million metric tons of oil equivalent.
Refineries are facilities where crude oil is turned into petroleum products. In Italy, the capacity of these facilities decreased from 2,377 thousand barrels daily in 2007 to 1,900 thousand barrels per day in 2014. Since then, the capacity has remained unchanged.
