Breakdown of air pollutant emissions in the EU-27 2021, by sector
The distribution of air pollutant sources varies greatly depending on the pollutant. For example, agriculture was responsible for 94 percent of ammonia (NH3) emissions in the European Union in 2021, but its contribution to other air pollutant emissions is minimal. Meanwhile, the commercial, residential, and institutional sector was the largest source of carbon monoxide, PM2.5, and PM10 emissions in 2021, while road transportation was responsible for the largest share of Nitrogen Oxide (NOx) emissions. Energy production and distribution is the largest source of both sulfur oxide (SOx) emissions and mercury (Hg) emissions.
