Biomass is the energy source with the greatest construction cost per kilowatt of installed nameplate capacity in the United States in 2021. That year, newly installed biomass generators cost an average 2,592 U.S. dollars per kilowatt. Battery storage was the second most expensive energy source, with an average cost of 1,796 U.S. dollars per kilowatt. By comparison, natural gas had the cheapest construction cost, with an average of 920 U.S. dollars per kilowatt. From various natural gas plants, combined cycle plants were the cheapest, with a construction cost of 948 U.S. dollars per kilowatt of nameplate capacity.
