Prefectures with high individual spending on year-end presents in Japan 2019
According to a survey conducted in November 2019 among locals of the 47 prefectures in Japan, residents in Okinawa planned to spend an average of 8,608 Japanese yen on year-end gifts (oseibo). The national average stood at 5,419 yen, with Aomori prefecture making up the rear end of the ranking.
Oseibo is a year-end gift-giving custom in Japan commonly practiced around the first half of December. The underlying idea of oseibo is to display gratitude towards those, who showed support and kindness to the gift-giver over the course of the year.
