percent of the Mexican population was estimated to lack access to social security and was therefore considered socially vulnerable. Among people with an indigenous backround, this rate rose up to 78.2 percent. This means that almost eight every ten Mexicans who belong to indigenous households are not entitled to social security benefits, whereas among people classified as non-indigenous the proportion stands at less than six of ten. Therefore, the chance of falling out of the social security system in Mexico is more than 23 percent lower for citizens who do not have indigenous ancestry than for those who do.
