In this statistic UK businesses in the digital sector have been divided into sub-sectors. The sub-sector Computer programming, consultancy and related services had the highest number of UK businesses in 2017 with 161,700. The sub-sector with the second most was Film, TV and Music with 28,300. There were just 3,500 UK businesses in the Manufacturing of electronics and computers sub-sector in 2017.

A business is held on the IDBR if it is registered for Value Added Tax (VAT) with HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC); registered for a Pay As You Earn (PAYE) scheme with HMRC; or an incorporated business registered at Companies House." and "2.The estimates for 2017 are provisional i.e. based on a business' initial return to the Annual Business Survey (ABS).
