Fat Thursday: average per capita doughnut consumption in Poland 2019
In Poland, Fat Thursday, known as Tłusty Czwartek, has been celebrated since the late Middle Ages and is a time for justified gluttony. Fat Thursday always falls on the last Thursday of the carnival, before Ash Wednesday, which marks the beginning of Lent.
In addition to jam, cream and chocolate filled doughnuts, known as pączki, thin strips of crispy pastry dough, known as faworki, are also consumed in huge amounts.
On this day Poland goes doughnut hunting! Among bakers and confectioners, Fat Thursday is considered one of the busiest days of the year.
