After the Taliban took over Afghanistan in August 2021, over 40 percent of respondents in Kazakhstan and nearly 30 percent in Uzbekistan were against recognizing the group as the legitimate Afghan government, according to a survey from August and September of the same year. While large shares of respondents could not answer the question, the portion of those who believed their countries should recognize the Taliban government reached 11 percent and 14 percent in Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan, respectively.
